Characteristics and Growth

Dendrocalamus longispathus, also known as Long Sheath Bamboo, is a large, tufted bamboo species native to South and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Grows up to 10–18 (or 20) meters high with a diameter of 6–10 cm, featuring thick walls and long internodes (25–60 cm) covered in pubescence.

Sheaths: Characterized by long, papery persistent culm-sheaths covered with stiff dark-brown hairs.

Distribution: Naturally found in moist tropical forests of Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, China and India. 

Identification Features: Culm Color-grayish green; Culm-sheaths 35-50 cm long and 10-20 cm broad, inner surface glabrous and outer surface clothed densely with patches of stiff dark-brown hair; Leaves 10-30 cm long, Oblong-lanceolate; Inflorescence a large panicle of interruptedly spicate clusters of spikelets; Caryopsis ovoid, yellow, surmounted by a beak formed by the base of the style.
